Dr. Theron Muller is an associate professor at Waseda University’s Faculty of Human Sciences. He received his doctorate from The Open University, UK in 2018, research that explored the publication practices of Japan-based language teachers. He has published and presented widely on writing for academic publication, English language teaching and learning, and teacher development including in Education Sciences, International Journal of Research & Method in Education, and Writing and Pedagogy. Abstract

This lecture introduces the concepts of code-switching and
translanguaging and considers how they shape communication in
multilingual and cross-cultural settings. Students will explore how
multilingual speakers draw flexibly on their linguistic resources,
rather than treating languages as entirely separate systems. Through
accessible examples and discussion, the session will encourage
participants to reconsider common assumptions about language use,
identity, and effective intercultural communication.
